Program Notes
As the Beirut Chants Festival raises its curtain, we invite you to a profound and uplifting musical journey. This evening’s program celebrates the enduring power of sacred music through two iconic works that speak to the resilience of the human spirit: excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Coronation Mass.
Amid challenges and uncertainties, these masterpieces remind us of the light that art can bring to our lives, offering messages of faith, hope, and unity.
Part I: Excerpts from Handel’s Messiah
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759)
First premiered in 1742, Handel’s Messiah remains one of the most enduring and beloved works in the classical canon. Its majestic choruses, heartfelt solos, and spiritual depth have captured the hearts of audiences for centuries. Tonight’s excerpts highlight the dramatic arc of the work, from the prophecies of the Old Testament to the triumphant proclamation of Christ’s resurrection.
Selected excerpts:
1. “Sinfonia ”(Orchestra)
2. “Thus saith the Lord”(Bass solo)
3. “But who may abide”(Bass solo)
4. “Rejoyce greatly” (Soprano solo)
5. “Hallelujah” (Chorus)
Part II: Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C Major, K. 317
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791)
Mozart’s Coronation Mass, composed in 1779, stands as one of his most celebrated and revered sacred works. Its nickname likely originates from its frequent use at imperial and royal coronations, but its musical splendor is what truly crowns it as a masterpiece.
The work blends Mozart’s operatic brilliance with a reverent spirituality, weaving together moments of profound solemnity and jubilant exultation. The radiant Gloria, the soaring melodies of the Credo, and the sublime beauty of the Agnus Dei make this Mass a cornerstone of the choral-orchestral repertoire.
Movements:
1. Kyrie: A prayerful opening that alternates between dramatic intensity and serene reflection.
2. Gloria: A joyful expression of praise with intricate choral and orchestral interplay.
3. Credo: A bold declaration of faith, culminating in the powerful Et incarnatus est.
4. Sanctus: A majestic hymn of adoration, marked by its stately grandeur.
5. Benedictus: A lyrical quartet featuring the soloists in an intimate, prayerful setting.
6. Agnus Dei: A poignant soprano solo that leads into a luminous and hopeful conclusion.
A Message of Hope
This evening’s program is more than a concert—it is a testament to the resilience of art and the human spirit. Over the past months, we have faced significant challenges, yet the commitment of our artists and the power of music have brought us to this moment.
We dedicate this performance to the enduring belief that beauty can emerge even from adversity and that music has the power to heal, unite, and inspire.
Thank you for joining us as we open this year’s Beirut Chants Festival with messages of faith, joy, and hope.
