Yossif Ivanov 

Acclaimed as “a player of impressive authority and presence” (The Strad), Yossif Ivanov quickly established himself after winning First Prize at the Montreal International Competition aged 16, and Second Prize, as well as the Public Prize, two years later at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, Brussels.

He has performed with orchestras such as Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, London Philharmonic Orchestra (tours in the UK and USA), Philharmonia Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, as well as all major Belgian Orchestras.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Yossif Ivanov has been invited to perform at the Berliner Philharmonie, Munich Herkulessaal, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Mozarteum Salzburg, Musikverein Vienna, Paris’ Louvre and Cité de la Musique, Philharmonie Essen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schloss Elmau, Rencontres Musicales d’Evian , Menton and Montpellier Festivals, Teatro Carlo Fenice Genova, Ravenna Musica, Ferrara Musica, Kioi Hall Tokyo, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, Ravinia festival, Washington Phillips Collection, Ladies’ Morning Musical Club in Montréal.

Yossif’s recording catalogue boasts high critical acclaim, including a Diapason d’Or de l’Année for his collection of Belgian sonatas (Franck, D’Haene and Ysaÿe) on the Ambroisie/Naïve label, as well as a Diapason d’Or in 2020 for the recording of a newly discovered Ysaÿe concerto on the Fuga Libera label.

Since 2008 he teaches at the Queen Elisabeth College of Music, as well as at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he is head of the violin department.

In recent seasons Yossif Ivanov has made acclaimed debuts with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Martha Argerich and Jian Wang in China, as well as chamber music performance at the 2024 Verbier Festival.

He has collaborated with conductors including Neeme Järvi, Marin Alsop, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Vladimir Jurowski, Kazushi Ono, Jaap Van Zweden, Stéphane Denève, Philippe Herreweghe, Hans Graf, Yuri Simonov, Louis Langrée, Maxim Emelyanychev, Aziz Shokhakimov, Joshua Weilerstein.

An avid chamber musician, Yossif Ivanov has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Mozarteum Salzburg, Musikverein Vienna, Carnegie Hall, Ravinia festival, Paris’ Cité de la Musique, Philharmonie Essen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schloss Elmau, Evian & Montpellier Festivals, Teatro Carlo Fenice Genova, Ravenna Musica, Ferrara Musica, Kioi Hall Tokyo, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall.

As well as his regular recital partner Philippe Ivanov, Yossif’s chamber music partners have included Itamar Golan, Javier Perianes, Ingrid Fliter, Frank Braley, David Kadouch, Lily Maisky, Maxim Rysanov, Mischa Maisky, Edgar Moreau, Pieter Wispelwey. Yossif’s recording catalogue boasts high critical acclaim, including a Diapason d’Or de l’Année for his collection of Belgian sonatas (Ambroisie/Naïve), as well as a Diapason d’Or in 2020 for the recording of a newly discovered Ysaÿe concerto (Fuga Libera).

Yossif studied with Zakhar Bron, Igor Oistrakh and Augustin Dumay. Since 2008 he teaches at the Queen Elisabeth College of Music, as well as at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he is head of the violin department.

He plays on a 1710 Carlo Tononi violin, kindly lent to him by the Queen Elisabeth College of Music.

 

PHILIPPE IVANOV

Since making his debut with orchestra at the age of nine, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto Kv.467, Belgian pianist of Bulgarian origin Philippe Ivanov (°1988) has been a soloist of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the Brussels Philharmonic, the Sofia Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the Bulgarian “New Symphony” Orchestra and the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

He has appeared at various venues and festivals around Europe, the United States and Canada including Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, MIDEM 2004 in Cannes, “Festival de Música Clàssica Castell Santa Florentina” in Barcelona, Orford Festival in Montréal, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and was also featured at the “Musical treasures of Bulgaria” at New York’s Weill Recital Hall – Carnegie Hall in 2009.

With his brother, violinist Yossif Ivanov, he forms a duo that occurs worldwide, most recently in Europe (London Wigmore Hall in 2017), Asia (Taipei National Theater & Concert Hall, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall in 2018) and South America (Sala de Conciertos de la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, Bogota, in 2017).

Philippe Ivanov was the winner of the 2002 Belgian Radio-Television Competition “Tenuto” in Brussels which gave him the opportunity to represent Belgium at the 2004 “EBU Eurovision Young Musicians” in Lucern.
In June 2010 he was announced winner of the “Premio Silvio Bengalli” International Piano Competition in Pianello Val Tidone (Italy).
He also was awarded the “Chopin Prize” during the International Chopin Competition of the 2010 Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg.
At the Academy he received the Prize for “Best Soloist” and was featured at the Preisträgerkonzert during the Salzburger Festspiele.
In March 2013 he won 3rd Prize at the 17th Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition in Japan.
He is a Semifinalist of the 59th International Piano Competition “Premio Ferruccio Busoni” in Bolzano.

He has graduated with High Honors from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels as a student of Daniel Blumenthal and pursued postgraduate studies at the “Mozarteum” University in Salzburg (Austria) as a student of Pavel Gililov.

Since 2015 he serves as a collaborative pianist of the violin department at the “Institut supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie” in Namur, Belgium.

Violin Sonata in G minor “Il trillo del diavolo” (Devil’s Trill Sonata)

A cornerstone of the violin repertoire, Tartini’s legendary Devil’s Trill blends baroque elegance with fiery virtuosity — famously inspired by a dream in which the Devil appeared at the composer’s bedside, playing a dazzling sonata.

Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924)

Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op. 13 (1876)

Written when Fauré was in his early thirties, this radiant and lyrical sonata is a masterpiece of French Romantic chamber music — combining youthful energy with deep poetic sensitivity.

Part II

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)

Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2 (1802)

One of Beethoven’s most dramatic violin sonatas, Op. 30 No. 2 combines symphonic scope with intimate chamber interplay. Its stormy opening and virtuosic finale make it a favorite among performers and audiences alike.

Maurice Ravel (1875–1937)

Tzigane (1924)

Ravel’s dazzling Tzigane is a virtuosic homage to the brilliance of Hungarian gypsy violin playing. Opening with a solo cadenza of breathtaking difficulty, it unfolds into a rhythmic, fiery showpiece for both violin and piano.
